Built for One Job: The FBI, the Duty Belt and the Snub-Nose

Popularity hides purpose. Every round on this shelf was built to solve a particular problem for a particular customer, and the design choices only make sense against that brief.
Knowing the job explains the cartridge.
Arm a police department
38sp ammo was Smith & Wesson's 1898 answer to complaints about the .38 Long Colt's stopping power, and it held the American duty belt for seventy years. Within it, federal 38 spl is the modern range-and-duty loading a department would actually buy by the case, and remington 38 special is Remington's version of the same everyday .38 — the phrasing usually points at its 130-grain UMC load.
Give that department more, in the same gun size
.357 magnum ammo was built in 1935 to give a service revolver rifle-like velocity, and it did. 357 sig bullets was built in 1994 to give a service *pistol* the same thing, by necking a .40 case down to a 9mm bullet.
Fit the FBI's requirement into a 9mm frame
40 s&w exists because the FBI's full-power 10mm was too much recoil for too many agents. Smith & Wesson and Winchester shortened the case in 1990 so the reduced load would fit a 9mm-sized pistol, and it became the American police cartridge of the next two decades.
Fit in a pocket
380 ammunition was Browning's 1908 answer to a pistol small enough to carry unnoticed and still fire a .35-caliber bullet.
Win a match
38 super auto ammo was Colt's 1929 hot-rod of the .38 ACP, and decades later practical-shooting competitors made it the classic “major” round for a 1911.
Hunt with a revolver
44 mag hunting ammo was Elmer Keith's decade-long argument for a hunting revolver, made real by Remington and Smith & Wesson in 1955. .44 spl, its parent, was built for a different job in 1907 — accuracy and reliability in the finest revolver S&W then made — and it still does that job well.
